What causes
Elbow pain ?
Most elbow pain results from overuse injuries especially due to poor technique, incorrect equipment or inadequate ergonomic set-up – think ‘tennis elbow’ or ‘golfer’s elbow’. Direct trauma, degenerative changes or bursitis are also common sauces of pain as well as infection or referral from the cervical spine.

Solutions ?
The treatments for elbow disorders depend on the underlying cause. Basic home remedies include ice, compression bandage and elevation. Elbows can be tricky joints that can easily become infected so any noticeable swelling should be seen immediately. Any pain lasting longer than 48 hours, especially in the absence of an acute event should be referred to a Physiotherapist.

Hand pain ?
The hand contains 27 small bones with at least 34 muscles that move the fingers and thumb, consequently a lot can go wrong. Usual causes of pain include direct trauma, overuse or conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Pain is also often referred from the neck and is therefore common in office workers and new mothers.

Solutions ?
Immediate pain relief depends on the source of the pain, but applying ice, modifying ergonomic setups, anti-inflammatories (check if appropriate for you), resting from aggravating activities or applying a brace may help. Finger injuriesin particular should be seen urgently as they lay down scar tissue very quickly which drastically effects movement and function of the joints.

Neck pain ?
The neck is under constant stress throughout the day, with reading, phone use, driving, etc. all dragging our heads forwards placing the heavy weight of the head on a long lever. This leads to overloading of the joints and altered movement patterns. Necks can also be injured in whiplash mechanisms such as falls or car accidents, direct trauma or suffer degenerative changes.

Solutions ?
Initially heat may be applied to provide some relief and reduce muscle spasms. Anti-inflammatories (if appropriate) are often beneficial to reduce inflammation while a scarf fixed tightly or soft collar can provide some rest to the affected joints. Pain lasting longer than 48hours or any referral of pain or altered sensation to the shoulder, elbow or hand should be assessed ASAP!

Knee pain ?
Knee pain may be the result of a direct injury, such as a ruptured ligament or torn cartilage (meniscus). It may also be the result of overuse (like a tendinopathy), poor biomechanics (such as patella malalignment) or degenerative changes (osteoarthritis). Medical conditions including arthritis, gout and infections also can cause knee pain as can referral from the hip or lumbar spine.

Solutions ?
Compression and immobilising the joint if painful when weight-bearing will help relieve pain and manage inflammation. Modifying aggravating activities may also be necessary. Ongoing pain, giving way of the knee or a sensation of locking up should all be investigated immediately.

Ankle pain ?
The ankle is the most commonly injured ankle in the body and the majority are inversion sprains (rolling over the outside of your ankle). Though the ankle may feel good fairly quickly, there is an extremely high recurrence rate and each successive episode heightens the risk of a more sinister outcome. Gout, arthritis, trauma, growing pains and poor mechanics can also cause ankle pain.

Solutions ?
Early intervention and a complete rehabilitation is the absolute key to all ankle injuries. We take all our weight through our ankles and feet, so the longer your pain is ignoredthe more difficult and lengthy the recovery can become. Proprioception is a key element of any recovery. Immediate at-home treatment of ankle pain includes rest, ice, and compression.

Wrist pain ?
Wrists are often injured from falls onto an outstretched hand resulting in fractures or sprains of the ligaments. Longer-term issues can result due to repetitive stress and poor posture and ergonomics resulting in tissue overload, arthritic changes or conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Solutions ?
Traumatic injuries should generally be treated with cold and immobilising the joint in a splint or brace and resting from aggravating activities. As symptoms settle, gentle stretching should be commenced and then a tailored strengthening program.

Back pain ?
Most people have back pain at least once in their lifetime. Pain can vary greatly from a mild ache to sharp, crippling spasms and referral of pain and altered sensation to the lower limbs. Backs are inherently strong, so while symptoms can be quite severe, it often does not accurately reflect the level of damage. Pain can be caused from facet joint sprains, muscle strains, bone stress or disc injuries, while various types of arthritis, tumours and issues with internal organs may also cause back pain.

Solutions ?
Most people find heat provides some relief though ice packs can also be used if preferred. Gentle pain-free stretches and short walks if comfortable are advised, while bedrest is generally not recommended. Persistent pain or referred symptoms into the lower limbs should be seen to as soon as possible.

Hip Pain pain ?
Soft tissue injuries to the hamstrings, gluteals and adductors can cause hip pain, while growth issues, arthritis, labral tears, bursitis and anatomical variances may also contribute. Hip pain is also often referred from the lumbar spine ensuring thorough diagnosis is required

Best acute management involves resting from aggravating activities, modifying training loads, compression, ice and analgesia (if appropriate). Identifying poor movement patterns and targeted strengthening exercises usually form the best treatment plans while injections to this joint are widely used, they should only form a small part of a treatment plan.

shoulder pain ?
Shoulder pain is an incredibly widespread complaint. The source of the problem could be derived from overuse or instability and is characterized by pain localized in the shoulder or deferred to other areas of the arm. Typically if there is no mechanism of injury, shoulder pain is often referred from the cervical or thoracic spine.

If pain is caused by a traumaticor repetitive incident, then ice and rest may be the best acute management. This may require immobilising in a sling as an injured limb hanging down may pull on the damaged tissue. Any episodes of dislocation or subluxation should be assessed by a physiotherapist to determine what damage has been done and develop a rehabilitation plan to reduce further recurrence.
